Scalp Psoriasis Defined
While it is usually easily treated, scalp psoriasis is a
disorder of the skin that affects a good portion of the world’s population.
It is not normally a life threatening disease but it can be quite repulsive
in more severe cases and can have psychological self-image affects on those
who suffer from it. For those who suffer from this form of psoriasis there
are numerous over the counter medications available to treat this skin
condition.
Scalp psoriasis is a chronic condition where the generation of new skin is
accelerated to a degree that it creates raised-red blotches on the skin.
This raised skin, or epidermal lesion, is covered with dry silvery scales
that itch, burn, crack, and sometimes bleed or become infected. If the scalp
psoriasis is severe enough it can be disfiguring and debilitating. Medical
science has been unable to pinpoint the exact cause but autoimmune attack on
the affected regions is the suspected cause. Attacks appear to be caused by
trauma, infection, hormonal changes and stress.
Scalp psoriasis can be extremely uncomfortable for its sufferers, resulting
in painful itching that if scratched leads to large flakes of scaly skin,
much like dandruff, to fall off the scalp. Not only is it painful and
uncomfortable but also it is a visually unappealing condition that people
who do not suffer its affects understand.
Scalp psoriasis is normally treated with over the counter medications. If
the over the counter medications do not provide the needed relief and put
the psoriasis into remission it is in the sufferers best interest to consult
with a doctor. For more sever forms of psoriasis a doctor can prescribe a
drug such as a cortisteroid anti-inflammatory drug which will reduce the
swelling and redness associated with psoriasis.
The majority of scalp psoriasis sufferers do not require prescription
medications and respond well to the over the counter drugs on the market
today. It is also important to remember that psoriasis affects everyone
differently and therefore a treatment that works for one may not work for
someone else. It may be necessary to try several different treatments,
whether OTC or prescription, before the desired results are obtained. In
many cases patience is required while the proper medication is found and
allowed to begin the treatment process. |
